IT ISSUE · APPLICATIONS AND SOFTWARE

Application running slowly

Often a fast computer waiting politely for a server it does not own.

When a single application drags while the rest of the machine is responsive, the computer is usually not the problem. Most business software now does its real work somewhere else, and a slow application is often a fast computer waiting politely for a server it doesn't own.

What you may notice

  • It is slow for everyone, including people working from home.
  • Other applications on the same machine are fine.
  • It is worse at particular times of day.
  • A report or search takes minutes rather than seconds.
  • A new machine didn't improve it.
WHERE WE LOOKWork out where the waiting happensRead how

Work out where the waiting happens

We look at whether the delay is on the device, on your network or beyond it. We also look at whether it affects one person, one site or everybody, which is usually enough to place it.

If the answer is the vendor's platform, replacing hardware won't help, and we'll say so before anyone quotes for it. That conversation is more useful with evidence: when it is slow, for whom, and how long an ordinary task takes. A vendor will act on that and won't act on being told their system feels sluggish.
