OneDrive stopped syncing

A warning icon points at the person, the device, the account, the storage and the permissions equally.

OneDrive sits across the person, the device, the Microsoft 365 account, where the file lives, how much storage is left and who has permission to it. A warning icon is usually the first thing anyone notices, and it points at all of those equally.

What you may notice

  • Files aren't appearing on another device.
  • A red cross or warning symbol appears.
  • OneDrive is signed out.
  • The device is low on storage.
  • A file name or type can't sync.
  • SharePoint or shared-library files are missing.

Protect unsynchronised work before resetting

We review the account, the sync client, device storage, the file path, permissions and the relevant Microsoft 365 service. Anything sitting locally that hasn't synced yet gets checked before the sync relationship is reset.

Don't delete a local folder just to clear the warning. Whatever hadn't synced yet is the thing you'd lose.
