User-profile migration

The files are what everybody worries about. They rarely go wrong. The old computer is the only undo button.

The files are the part everybody worries about. They rarely go wrong. What gets left behind is the accumulated set of small things nobody thinks to list, because none of them feel like data until the morning they are missing.

What usually gets left behind

  • An email signature built up over years.
  • Passwords saved in a browser rather than anywhere else.
  • A local mail archive that was never in the cloud.
  • Mapped drives and printers set up once and forgotten.
  • Software activated against the old machine.
  • Files sitting on the desktop rather than in a synced folder.

Plan the swap around what isn't in the obvious places

We identify the account, what is synced already, what is only local, which applications need reactivating and what has to be captured before the old machine is wiped or returned.

The most useful thing you can do takes five minutes and happens before we start: sit with the person and ask what they would miss on Monday if the old computer went in a skip on Friday. Their answer is always longer than their documents folder, and it is always more accurate than ours.
