Server storage nearly full

A deadline rather than a notice. A server that fills does not slow down, it stops.

Treat this as a deadline rather than a notice. A server that fills completely doesn't slow down, it stops: services fail, databases refuse writes and backups stop running, often in that order.

What is normally taking it

  • Log files that were never rotated.
  • Old backups or snapshots kept on the same machine.
  • Database transaction logs that haven't been truncated.
  • Update files left behind after installs.
  • Shadow copies or restore points.
  • Business data, which is usually the smallest of these.

Free space deliberately, not urgently

We identify what is consuming the disk, what can be removed safely, what is being retained for a reason and what needs more room rather than less content.

The tempting move at three in the afternoon is to delete the largest folder. On a server that is how people remove a backup chain, a database log that had not been committed, or something a compliance obligation covered. Before deleting anything, find out what is using the space and why it is there. That check is the difference between a tidy-up and an incident.
