Device storage full

Rarely full of the things the person put there. Deleting to make room is how the only copy goes.

The disk is rarely full of the things the person using it put there. It is more often full of what accumulated around them: update caches, the profiles of people who left, browser data and cloud files somebody marked to keep on the device without knowing what that meant.

What you may notice

  • Warnings about low disk space.
  • Updates fail or won't download.
  • Applications become slow or refuse to save.
  • Cloud sync stops with no obvious error.
  • Deleting files barely moves the number.

Find what is taking the space before removing anything

We look at what is consuming the disk, what is safe to clear, what is only stored here and what is syncing, then free space in that order.

Deleting things to make room is how people lose the only copy of something. A file that appears to be in the cloud isn't necessarily uploaded yet, and a desktop folder isn't a backup. And if a machine fills up every few months, cleaning it is a subscription to an afternoon rather than a fix: the disk is too small for the work being asked of it, and we'd rather say so than keep coming back.
